We are planning to host a carousel of activities aimed at the students in the junior schools that feed into our school. Our goal is to engage and excite students who don't often get a lot of a chance to learn about Computing in the classroom about the subject, especially those with an underprivileged background.
We will be primarily focusing on coding, as this is often a stumbling block for our primary schools due to teacher experience/knowledge and the lack of time given to the subject. We will use BBC Microbits for a number of the activities, ranging from simple programs like a dice to data logging and using the radio features. We also plan to use our Lego Spike Prime sets to build a buggy, Minecraft for block coding, and perhaps Scratch too as well as some basic AI education. In doing this we will also be able to touch on networks and esafety as well as linking some of the activities to other STEM subjects.
We're targeting disadvantaged students especially, who have low income or come from a deprived area and have no access to IT. This is in order to bridge the gap in their knowledge and confidence in Computing before they make the move to secondary school as many of our new Year 7s have little experience of Computing and often struggle to use a PC or Chromebook. By running these fun activities with an almost play-based approach in Lego, Minecraft and Microbits we hope to give them a memorable experience but also show them that they can do Computing.
Once the event is approved we will reach out to our feeder schools to nominate students/classes to come for the event. We will prioritise disadvantaged students first.
