Beschreibung
This event will be free for local children who are registered with the ASK charity. This charity provides support for neurodivergent children up to the age of 18. I will work closely with the charity manager, Olive Donnan, as I have for the previous two years. We will promote it widely including via their Facebook page which is widely accessed.
The program for the event can best be understood but viewing the pages which I created for the previous two events, which are as follows: www.flickernet.net/ask and www.flickernet.net/ask2
Northern Ireland does not have much provision of this nature for these children. The feedback has been exceptionally positive with a huge interest in coding generated for these children and their families. Please feel free to email me should you have any further questions. Thank you.
Description as entered previously follows:
ASK is the Autism Support Kilkeel group - for whom I delivered this Meet and Code event last year. They have asked me to repeat the event for them this year as there remain many children eager to participate.
This outdoor learning event will provide project-based learning experiences for a group of 8-10 autistic children from the local community. They will use Micro:Bits to communicate and express themselves whilst exploring the natural environment aided by technology, leading to the development of their coding skills, social interaction, and beneficial sensory encounters.
Content will include:
Introduction to the Micro:Bit, features, functions and core concepts of input / output / data processing and examples of application
Review of programming fundamentals with learners. Ascertaining of existing level of coding skills in the expectation that the existing level of knowledge of this technology and the extent of existing skills will be minimal.
Resources will include a Micro:Bit each, access to sufficient PCs for coding which will be located under cover in a forest clearing (which has mains power and high speed WiFi already in place); a projector; seating and tables.
Stages:
Introduction to Physical Computing: specific examples given of where it is helpful
Summary of the Micro:Bit, its features and functionality
Each child will have been matched up with one or more carers.
Demonstration of the MakeCode software and downloading process. This will be unhurried and paced appropriately, as will all subsequent coding.
Micro: Bits will then be coded
