Nature Detectives Club

St Minver School Parent & Teacher Association

Description We are applying for funding to run the Nature Detectives Club, a project designed to engage SEN and disadvantaged pupils in KS2 with digital technology using a nature-based approach. Through sessions using wildlife cameras set up around the school grounds, pupils will learn key digital skills in a gentle, accessible way. The project content focuses on digital literacy, observation, data collection and analysis, with pupils recording and analysing the types and frequencies of birds visiting the school. The process will support maths development through tally charts, data handling and graph-making, while promoting technology confidence. Younger children will work on collecting data using simple charts, which will then be passed to older children for digital analysis and presentation. As a final outcome, pupils will collaborate to create a page on the school’s website showcasing the project’s findings, building basic web design skills in the process. Teaching methods include hands-on use of wildlife cameras, teamwork, real-world data analysis, and teacher-led guidance. Resources include wildlife cameras, visual recording materials, and access to the school’s digital platforms.

The primary goal is to help SEN and disadvantaged pupils develop confidence in using technology, particularly those with sensory needs or low engagement with screen-based learning. By connecting technology to the natural world, we offer a non-threatening introduction to digital learning that reduces barriers faced by these pupils. The project is designed for all KS2 children, with broad benefits for all learners through cross-year collaboration. What makes this project unique is its nature-focused, sensory-friendly approach: pupils interact with technology in an outdoor, practical setting, where they feel more comfortable and engaged. Equipment purchased will be used in future years, making the project sustainable and scalable across the school.
