The Coding Cogs

St Minver School Parent & Teacher Association

Description We are applying for funding to introduce Robotical Cogs Coding Sessions, aimed at providing SEN pupils and younger learners in Years 3 and 4 with a gentle introduction to coding and digital technology. This project focuses on teaching basic programming concepts such as sequencing, logic, and cause and effect using simplified, microbit-like devices called Robotical Cogs. Sessions will use visual, hands-on learning methods, allowing pupils to experiment with physical computing in an accessible, child-friendly way. Resources will include Robotical Cogs devices and simple, block-based coding interfaces, supported by teacher guidance. Each child will have opportunities to build, program and problem-solve using real-world equipment, preparing them for later use of microbits in upper KS2. Sessions are delivered as four one-hour interventions during school hours, integrated into pupils’ regular school day.

The primary goal is to build coding confidence in SEN and disadvantaged pupils, especially those who struggle with abstract, screen-based learning or find microbits challenging due to motor or cognitive needs. By introducing physical computing earlier in Years 3 and 4, we aim to scaffold skills and reduce anxiety about using technology in later years. The project’s target group includes younger pupils with limited digital experience, as well as older SEN children needing alternative pathways into coding. What makes these sessions special is the use of tactile, simplified devices that remove common barriers to engagement, making coding both accessible and enjoyable. Sessions are delivered directly to selected pupils in groups of around 30 children, ensuring targeted support within the classroom environment. A further club will also be introduced to encourage KS2 girls to further their coding experience.
